The Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) provides a standard
mechanism for support of additional authentication methods within layer
2 protocols, including PPP and IEEE 802. Through the use of EAP,
support for a number of authentication schemes may be added, including
public key, smart cards, Kerberos, One Time Passwords, and others.
